What is VNC Viewer?

The VNC Viewer is a small application that is used to establish a connection to the VNC Server. If you are using a Java-capable brower, you can also connecto to the VNC viewer.

Where to download the VNC Viwer?

If you have not already done so, you can download the VNC Viewer from RealVNC. You do not need to download the "Full Installation" only the "Viewer Program Only".

If you already have the VNC Viewer, copy the "vnc-4.0-x86_win32_viewer.exe" file to the remove computer. (Note: You may wish to shorten the file name to something like "VNCView.exe". )

Using The VNC Viewer:

Step 1:

When you first execute the VNC Viewer application, a logon screen will appear asking for the address of the VNC Server you wish to connect to.

Step 2:

You now see one of the next two screens. The first shows that the viewer is attempting to connect to the VNC Server. If it is not able to connect, then a error message will be displayed. If this happens, check the VNC Server address you entered. If the address is correct then there may be a problem with the mode of communications being used or there may be a problem with the VNC Server computer.

Step 3:

Once the connection is established, you will be asked to enter a password. This password is set when the VNC Server was first configured. Refer to Knowledge Base Article 0008 for information on setting the password.

Step 4:

Once authenticated, a screen will appear displaying the desktop of the VNC Server computer.

With a VNC connection established, you have full control over the VNC Server computer just as if you were sitting in front of it.

Keep in mind that connection from the VNC Viewer to the VNC Server is not encryped. There are methods that can be done to establish a secure encryped connection such as using VPN. Another method that can be used with a dial-up connection is to use SSH (Secure Shell) or OpenSSH.

Using The Java VNC Viewer

Step 1:

Using a Java-capable browser, open up the browser and place into the address box the IP address of the VNC Server and set to port 5800 as shown below.
